Which City Really Does Have The Most Restaurants Per Capita

Travel to most city websites around the net and you?ll be surprised by how many purport to have more restaurants per capita than anywhere else. This is claimed by San Francisco; Madison, Wisconsin; Washington DC; and Shreveport, Louisiana. At least Canadian cities stake the same claim.

So which cities do have a legitimate claim to the title of ?Most Restaurants Per Capita?? The National Restaurant Association (NRA) does publish a list of restaurants per capita per state. According to the Association, California has by far the most restaurants with a staggering 87,225 dining establishments. New York State comes in at a paltry 58,027. The top five is rounded out by Texas (53,631), Florida (41,901) Pennsylvania (31,466).

In terms of per capita per state, Washington DC tops the list according to NRA. The US capital region boosts some 0.4 restaurants per 100 people. Second is, surprisingly, Montana at .354 restaurants per 100 people. Rounding out the NRA?s top five are Rhode Island (0.304 per 100) Vermont (.303 per 100) New York (.301 per 100). If you are a little hungry you might want avoid the three states with the fewest restaurants Mississippi, Kentucky and Utah. In terms of North American cities, it is a little harder to ascertain who can claim the title of city with most restaurants per capita.

Here are ten cities with more than 100,000 people that have made the claim. But who has the real claim? Who offers the cuisine searcher or just plain hungry shopper the most choice? Who can claim the title of The Restaurant City.

The city of San Francisco is a city of 744,230 people and claims to have 2,662 restaurants within the city boundaries. There is no doubt that the standard of restaurants in the city of the bay is exceptional. If you just include San Francisco properly your density is 279 people per restaurant. But because costs of housing the number of people living in the city proper has declined while the number of businesses including restaurants, San Francisco is a distorted number. If you count the metro area, the number of restaurants climbs to 4,300 restaurants (we won?t include hundreds more in the nearby wine country of Napa and Sonoma). If you consider the metro area population of 7,168,176 and divide by 4,300 you get a per capita density of 1,667 people per restaurant.

Winnipeg is a city on the edge of the Canadian prairies that boasts a broad cross section of immigrant communities all of whom have their local ethnic cuisines. If you want French toast for breakfast, perogies and sauerkraut for lunch , and Vietnamese imperial rolls for dinner then this is the place to come. This city regularly claims to have more restaurants per capita than any other city. Some websites claim the city has 900 restaurants but in reality there are just 478. With a population of 619,544 Winnipeg can claim only one restaurant per 1,296 snow-bound Canadian.

Victoria. This city on Vancouver Island and capital city of British Columbia, Canada regularly makes the claim that it has the ?second highest number of restaurants per capita,? which is perhaps clever psychology as the city has never indicted which is top. With a population of 335,000 the city claims to have 265 Italian, French, Greek, East Indian, Vegetarian, German, Dutch, Mexican, Chinese, Japanese, Vietnamese, and Thai eateries. That means Victoria has a restaurant per 1,264 people. But with its spectacular location halfway between Vancouver and Seattle, you?d hardly care if its claim is a little off.

In New York City no one cooks at home and by the time you?ve heard of a restaurant it has probably closed. Restaurants open and close with alarming alacrity in the Big Apple. On average, the city of New York can claim 6,650 dining places from the chic Lespinasse to the greasiest corner diner -- the most restaurants in any one place on the continent. Yet with 8,168,338 people, New York can only claim to have 1, 228 people per restaurant. It might seem that every second building in New York is a restaurant but they have to cater to a lot of vertically housed residents. That explains why it is hard to find a table some nights.

The one Canadian city that can make a great claim to have the most restaurants per capita is Montreal in the province of Quebec. With just over 5,000 restaurants in the metro island area, is appears there are at least one restaurant on every street corner. With its diverse immigrant population and French majority, the city has every type of cuisine available from Lebanese to continental French to native Canadian. Some 3,720,000 Quebecois live in the metro area making Montreal the second largest French speaking city in the world. Giving it a restaurant per capita number of 744.

When you leave Austin you enter Texas so the saying goes. This funky city in central Texas has 1,088 eating places to enhance its reputation as Music City USA. That list includes 128 establishments in or around the University of Texas alone. Austin?s burgeoning population is currently 690, 252 making their people to restaurant ratio 634.

Louisville, home to the Kentucky Derby, is a small city of just over half a million people. Pap John?s Pizza and Yum Brands, the parent company of A&W, KFC, Pizza Hut and Taco Bell, both make Louisville their corporate home so it is not surprising that that this city on the Ohio River has 1,089 restaurants. That makes for 510 people per restaurant.

Madison owns the rights to the title of ?city with the most restaurants per capita? and the capital makes the claim throughout its literature. However, pining down the actual number of restaurants is pretty hard. The best list available points to 437 restaurants that caters to 221,551 people in the Wisconsin city. But that makes for only 506 people for each restaurant. Good for only third on this list.

Wichita, Kansas is not usually a city that leaps to mind when one thinks of cuisine. But with an ethnically diverse work force, the largest city in Kansas has a reputation for cultural diversity and is located in the breadbasket of America. The 739 restaurants in town have only to cater to 360, 715 people. That translates into 488 people per restaurant, good for second on our list.

Dallas. This Lone Star State city has a population of 1,250,950 and a selection of restaurants that add up to 2,666. While the city is known for its BBQ and steak houses there is a surprising mix of great eateries from chic to basic. That means every restaurant, fast food place and steak house in Texas? third largest city can boast an potential pool of just 469 people. Thousands of people drive by The Raymond Restaurant every day and don't even realize what it is. The Raymond Restaurant, 1250 S. Fairoaks Ave., Pasadena, Ca. 91105, (626) 441-3136, occupies and old weathered caretaker's cottage which looks, from the outside, like a fairly run down old house set back off the street. Looks, however, can be deceiving. The old saying, "You can't judge a book by it's cover", is especially true in the case of The Raymond. Inside that weathered cottage is one of the best fine dining establishments in Los Angeles County.

Inside The Raymond you are transported to a cozy, romantic, old fashion setting with intimate dining rooms, secluded booths, comfortable seating, leaded glass, fine china, and three candlelit garden patios.

There is another old saying, "you get what you pay for". That saying doesn't hold true in the case of The Raymond Restaurant. There you get much more than your money's worth. Their prices are extremely reasonable, take their 12 ounce filet mignon with sauteed vegetables, chanterelle mushrooms, herbed butter, crispy leeks and garlic mashed potatoes for $39.00. The beef is tender aged prime beef cooked exactly the way you ask for it, the sauteed vegetables are not over or under cooked, the chanterelle mushrooms are delicious and the garlic mashed potatoes are spiced just right. I have had meals that cost twice as much and are not half as good. The only problem with The Raymond is that their menu is rather sparse when it comes to beef. Their only beef entre is the filet mignon. If you have to have prime rib or a ribeye or other type of steak you are out of luck.

The service at The Raymond is excellent. The waitstaff are friendly without being too familiar, attentive while not being obsequious and speedy without rushing you or invading your space.

The ambiance at The Raymond is quiet, relaxing and romantic. Fowl Fish Fight Fat: Most good restaurants have the menu marked for "heart-healthy" or low fat meals, but, even if they don't, you can make low fat choices. If it flies or swims, chances are pretty good it's lower in fat than the other choices. Just like with the fast foods, avoid breaded or fried foods. So, we can choose baked or grilled seafood and poultry dishes to lower the fat in our diets. Skinless white meats are the lowest fat choices in poultry.

Miscellaneous Munching Morsels: These tips are tossed in on the side to help you in your low fat dining experience. Sour dough bread is the lowest in fat. Always order breads with no butter or margarine (you can add it at the table). Usually, the clearer the salad dressing the lower in fat. Oil and vinegar-very low...ranch-very high in fat. White rice or baked potato (all flavorings on the side) are the lowest fat choices in carb dishes. If the menu doesn't say, always ask how the main dish is prepared and use the above tips as your guide. Tea, Black coffee, diet cola or water are the non-fat beverage choices. It's probably best just to skip the restaurant desserts unless you make a special trip just for dessert once or twice a year. Hey! A little bit won't send you to the hospital. Eating is more than nutrition or we wouldn't have so many taste buds.

The American Residential Furniture Market - Forecast to 2015

The value of the furniture market in the United States amounted to an estimated $78.5 billion (2005) measured at retail prices. Of this, 38.0% is wooden case-goods (mainly bedroom furniture), 33.9% is upholstered furniture (mainly chesterfields and matching chairs), 17.1% is mattresses and foundations, and the remaining 11.0% is metal furniture (mainly outdoor furniture).

Measured at manufacturers? prices domestic household furniture sales reached an estimated $30.7 billion in 2005 or about 47.5% of the total dollars spent by U.S. households on furniture. The $47.8 billion difference between the prices received at the retail level and the prices received at the manufacturers? level represents a combination of transportation costs, wages and other costs at the retail level, the retailer?s profit margin, plus all sales taxes.

Over the last two decades household furniture purchases increased significantly from $29.3 billion in 1985 to $78.5 billion in 2005, or 168%. In other words, sales increased at an average annual pace of approximately 5.5% over this period. However, growth has been much slower recently, and in 2005 growth of household furniture sales was only 3.9% (nominal terms).

Some of the growth during the past 20 years was due to rising prices. If expressed in constant 2000-dollar terms, the increase between 1985 and 2005 was 146%, that is from $ 34.0 billion to $ 83.9 billion.

The number of households in the United States will grow by about 12.5% over the next decade (that is about 1.2% per year). This pace is a bit faster than the 8.0% pace for the total population. We expect real disposable income per household will also increase by about 42.6% (or slightly more than 3.5% per year) over that period. Thus total real disposable income will grow by about 55.1% between 2005 and 2015.

Based on these assumptions, We expect furniture spending growth to continue throughout the projection horizon, accelerating from an annual real rate of 4.1% this year to 5.5% next year, Thereafter, it will gradually slow down to a rate of about 4.0% in 2015. Thus, real household furniture spending - in constant 2005 dollars - will grow by 55.1% from $78.5 billion in 2005 to $121.7 billion in 2015.

Removing water stains on wood furniture ? There are two way to remove a water stain from wood furniture. 1) lay a blotter cloth over the spot and run a warm iron over it until the stain is gone. 2) rub lemon oil into the spot, let set overnight, wipe the excess oil off.

Removing alcohol stains on wood furniture ? any substance containing alcohol (drinks, medicines, cosmetics) can eat through wood finish quickly. When a spill occurs, grab a cloth and moisten it with lemon oil. Rub the spot with the cloth (if the spot is dry, remove with the same method as you wood a burn on wood).

Hide scratches on dark cherry or mahogany wood furniture ? rub spot with a cotton swab dipped in iodine.

Hide scratches on unshellacked maple or light cherry wood furniture ? rub spot with a cotton swab dipped in iodine diluted 50% with denatured alcohol.

Darken a scratch on wood furniture ? scoop out the meat of a walnut and rub it gently on the scratch. Make sure you rub it directly on top of the scratch.

Remove scratches from oiled finishes on wood furniture ? take fine steel wool and dip it into light mineral oil or boiled linseed oil. Rub in the direction of the grain. Let oil soak into wood, then wipe scratch area dry with a clean cloth.

Remove burns on wood furniture ? obtain finely powdered pumice stone (check woodworking suppliers) and mix with linseed oil. Take a soft cloth and rub the burn, in the direction of the grain, with the paste. Keep repeating until burn spot disappears. This works best on light burns.

Remove glass rings from wood furniture ? rub the rings with a mixture made of mayonnaise and white toothpaste. Wipe dry, then polish entire tabletop.

Remove spilled milk stains on wood furniture ? dip a damp cloth in ammonia or silver polish and rub stain area. Wipe dry with clean cloth.

Cleaning leather furniture ? wash furniture with a solution of 1/4 cup vinegar and a half cup of water. Next, wash furniture with saddle soap (available at shoe and hardware stores). Lastly, rub furniture briskly with a soft cloth.

Caring for wicker furniture ? wicker tends to be dry and can get brittle or split. Place brittle wicker furniture inside a bathtub and drench with water to restore moisture. Keep wicker away from heated areas such as stove, radiator, and fireplace.

Furniture polish tips ? 1) polish furniture often with a lint-free cloth moistened lightly with furniture polish. 2) use furniture polish sparingly. It?s the rubbing motion (or elbow grease) that is the real secret to maintaining a great shine. 3) stick with either an oil or wax based furniture polish. Using both on the same piece can cause smudges and blotches. 4) remove wax build up by moistening a soft cloth with synthetic turpentine, mineral spirits or liquid polish, and cleaning entire surface.

Do You Want To Know What Is The Most Requested Curry At The Best Indian Restaurants in London?

Welcome to the Gourmet Indian Recipe Series. Today we bring you the curry that everybody is talking about all over the world, Lamb Dhansak Curry!

Ingredients: 500g diced lamb, 1 tsp. cumin seeds, 1 tsp. coriander seeds, 1 tsp. fennel seeds, 4 cardomom pods, 2" cinnamon stick, ? tbsp. black peppercorns, 2 bay leaves, ? tsp. black mustard seeds, 1 dried habanero chilli, 75g green lentils, 75g red lentils, 1 tsp. turmeric, ? tsp. ground fenugreek, 1 tbsp. HP sauce, 1 tbsp. Geeta?s pineapple chutney, ? tbsp. brown sugar, 1 pint (550 ml) brown stuff, 1 pint (550 ml) water, 2 tbsp. finely chopped fresh coriander, 2 tsp. garam masala, 2 tbsp. ghee for frying

Method:

1. Grind the whole spices and chilli together.

2. Thoroughly coat the meat with the spices and leave to marinade for at least a couple of hours (preferably overnight in the fridge).

3. Heat half the ghee in a large saucepan and add the ground spice and lentils.

4. Fry for 2 minutes.Add the brown stuff & water and season with salt. Bring to the boil, cover and gently simmer for 30 minutes, stirring occasionally to make sure it doesn?t stick.

5. Meanwhile, heat the remaining oil or ghee in a large pan ? it must be very hot.

6. Add your lamb in batches (it will spit everywhere so take care) and turn in the fat to brown it.

7. Remove from the heat once the lamb is well browned.

8. When the lentils are ready (they should be quite soft) add the meat, HP sauce, chutney and sugar.

9. Cover and simmer for a further 30 minutes. Add a little more water to loosen as required.

10. Mix in the garam masala, and remove from the heat.

11. Just before serving, stir in the chopped fresh coriander.

You see, the chemistry in many commercially available pet flea medications is not friendly to leather; creating bleaching or discoloration damage on contact. It acts like a strong solvent, stripping the color from the leather. This is most commonly seen in the form of bleaching/smearing of the leather?s color on the lower front or lower back and sides; places on your furniture where the pet would rub its neck shortly after the flea medication is applied.

The damage to the leather can be from a distance as well. If your pet vigorously shakes themselves in the vicinity of leather furniture, then a significant number of tiny flea medication droplets can be sprayed across the leather, each having its damaging affect. Every place that a droplet lands can turn into bleached spot. If you see it happen, and then try to wipe the spots, you?ll end up creating a bigger mess by smearing the solvent nature of the medication over a broader area.
